About Hordebreaker
Welcome to the Starlite Arcade
Hi, and thank you for dropping a coin in. Hordebreaker is open for early access testing, and whether you played one floor or forty, I'm glad you're here.
The setup: the Starlite Arcade closes tonight. The auction truck comes at 6:00 AM, and one cabinet isn't on the auction list. It's on the scrap list, and it knows. While someone is playing it, it's sure it exists, so it would really like you to keep playing.
That cabinet is the game. This first post covers what Hordebreaker is, where it comes from, and then goes deep on a few systems I'm proud of. If you only read one part, read the last section: I want to hear from you.
What you're playing
Hordebreaker is a top-down horde crawler. It has classic arcade bones and a modern looter's appetite. A run looks like this:
Floors full of monsters. Generators keep pumping enemies out until you break them, so you learn to kill the spawners first and kite the rest through loops and choke points.
Food, keys and vaults. Your health drains slowly, so food matters. Keys open gold-doored vaults full of chests.
A boss every third floor, twelve in all, each with a named signature attack.
Level-ups draft boons (pick one of three), and gear drops with affixes, sets, sockets and runes.
The Coin-Op sits between floors: spend your gold on gear, a meal, a key or a continue.
Credits. Dying offers a continue, so a great build doesn't end on one mistake.
There are 14 heroes. Five play the way you'd hope (Warrior, Ranger, Wizard, Valkyrie, Rogue). The other nine each bend the game into a different genre: a level editor, a time puzzle, a physics sandbox, a deckbuilder, a rhythm game, a tower defense, a possession game, a reverse horde, and a speedrunner's bug. After the first boss you can find a Cartridge Slot and fuse a second class into yours.
